Mylar FAQ

Straight answers about Mylar

Mylar is AI-assisted takeoff software for mechanical and HVAC contractors. Here is what it does, who it is for, how review works, how your data is handled, pricing, and how to start. The overview is on AI takeoff software for HVAC and mechanical contractors.

What Mylar is

What is Mylar?

Mylar is AI-assisted takeoff software for mechanical and HVAC contractors. It reads the drawing, suggests the takeoff for your estimator to confirm, prices it your way, and keeps up with every addendum. Mylar is in private beta, taking a few pilot partners.

Who is Mylar for?

Mechanical and HVAC contractors and their estimators and bid desks. It is built for mechanical contractors with several estimators who bid a lot of work. A smaller shop can run one live bid with Mylar alongside its normal process.

What does Mylar take off?

Ductwork, air devices and equipment: supply, return and exhaust ductwork with its fittings and dampers; grilles, registers, diffusers and louvers; rooftop units, fans, makeup air units and thermostats. Mylar is built for the sheet-metal side of mechanical work. Piping isn't supported yet.

Where does Mylar run?

Mylar is web software. Existing users sign in at takeoff.mylar.ai.

Is Mylar available now?

Mylar is in private beta, taking a few pilot partners. The way to start is a bake-off on your own drawings.

How it works with your estimators

Does Mylar replace my estimator?

No. Mylar suggests; your estimator decides. Nothing goes into the bid until someone on your team has confirmed it. Your estimators spend their time reviewing and pricing instead of clicking and counting.

How does the review work?

Mylar reads your mechanical drawings, finds the ducts and suggests the takeoff right on the plan, where you can see it. Your estimator fixes anything it got wrong, accepts the rest and exports the count. Your estimator confirms every number.

How accurate is Mylar?

Every item Mylar suggests is confirmed by your estimator before it goes into the bid, so the numbers in your bid are numbers your team has checked. The best test is your own drawings: in a bake-off we score Mylar against your current process on time, accuracy against your final numbers, and the addendum.

Can Mylar price the job?

Yes. The takeoff becomes a priced bid using your own prices and labor standards, and you approve the bid. Shared prices and labor standards mean every estimator on your team prices the same way, so a new hire prices the way your senior estimator does.

How does Mylar handle addenda and revisions?

When the drawings change, Mylar shows what changed and what it does to the number, so you can re-price and back up the change order without starting over.

What drawings and files does Mylar work with?

Your mechanical drawings: you upload them, Mylar suggests the takeoff, and your estimator exports the result. Mylar works alongside the estimating tools you already use, with exports you can bring into them.

Pricing and getting started

How much does Mylar cost?

We believe in Mylar, and we price it that way: it's built to help your bottom line, with more bids out the door and hours back for your estimators. We'll walk through pricing with you directly.

What is a bake-off?

A side-by-side test on your own work before you decide. Pick 2–3 past bids you've already priced, so there's a known answer. Two of your estimators take the same bids off, one the way you do today and one with Mylar, and we score time, accuracy against your final numbers, and the addendum. You keep the scorecard either way.

How do I start?

Book a bake-off at mylar.ai or email contact@mylar.ai. Tell us a little about your shop and what you bid, and we'll reach out to set up a time.
